On May 9, 2005 Pope Benedict XVI gave the instruction to Cardinal Ruini, his Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome, to begin immediately investigating the life of Pope John Paul II for possible beatification and then canonization. Paperwork is also being gathered in Krakow, Poland.  Pope Benedict thereby waived the church regulations that a person had to be dead five years prior to opening an investigation into their life.  A Polish priest, Msgr. Slawomir Oder,  was appointed as the Postulator, or simply the person in charge of gathering the evidence to advance his cause.

An "official" church prayer for Pope John Paul's intercession was established.

John Paul's secretary, now the Archbishop of Krakow,  has intimated to the press that a miraculous cure of a French nun is the one miracle that is being heavily investigated for the Pope's beatification.  Thousands of miracle claims have already been made.

March 11, 2007 The diocese of Rome is completing their investigation on April 2, 2007.  The Curia will be assuming the investigative work now.
